So a few months ago I got a chronograph and started using it. At first not very successfully, lot of errors and not registering at all. Finally got the lighting conditions figured out, optimal shooting distance and zone above the reader. Works great now.
My main Desert Eagle shooting time is done with 50AE. Shooting .357, .41, and .44 are all secondary, just to be clear. Because these three calibers are much newer to me, I tested several brands and loadings in each caliber. After I found calibers that worked really well in each brand, I decided to run them across the chronograph and see what I got.
The purpose of this posting is just to show some ammo that works reliably in my Desert Eagle and its actual ballistic performance, but not accuracy as I did not set up targets for each ammo type.
Here are some of the results...
Test Platforms: 1993 MkVII/XIX (.50AE Slide) for 357/44. MkVII .41 was for .41 Magnum only (44/41 slide)
For .357, used current gen .357 Mk XIX bolt assembly.
Most test groups were taken from one or two magazines, or 16 to 18 shots.
.357 Magnum
Ammo: Winchester SuperX, 158gr JSP
6" Barrel: AVG 1309fps/600ft-lbs
10" Barrel: AVG 1514fps/802ft-lbs
Ammo: Aguilla, 158gr SJSP
6" Barrel: AVG 1250fps/558ft-lbs
10" Barrel: AVG 1478fps/766ft-lbs
.41 Magnum
Ammo: Precision One XTP, 210gr HP/XTP
6" Barrel: AVG 1313fps/804ft-lbs
10" Barrel: AVG 1511fps/1063ft-lbs
.44 Magnum (forgot the 10" barrel this time.)
Ammo: Precision One, 240gr FMJ (Target Ammo, not XTP and not the custom round they make specifically for the Desert Eagle)
6" Barrel: AVG 1173fps/733ft-lbs (note the fps deviation was really high on this round @ 210fps, 1078 to 1288)
Ammo: PPU, 240gr JHP
6" Barrel: AVG 1363fps/990ft-lbs
Ammo: PPU, 300gr JSP
6" Barrel: AVG 1072fps/765ft-lbs
Ammo: Sellier & Bellot, 240gr JSP
6" Barrel: AVG 1276fps/868ft-lbs
Ammo: PMC Bronze, 180gr JHP
6" Barrel: AVG 1524fps/928ft-lbs
All of these ammo function perfectly in my gun with the exception of the Precision One Target ammo in .44 Magnum. Precision One knows this ammo will not properly cycle the slide in the Desert Eagle, and even makes a custom round guaranteed to work in the Desert Eagle pistol. If your gun is clean and functioning well, this target ammo will probably work well, but not perfect as the rounds aren't extremely consistent, and weak ones may not eject reliably. Any of Precision Ones XTP ammo works fine in all calibers and types of guns I have used it in. I tried it because it was inexpensive.
That is all for now... eventually I will get the time on a perfect day for the chronograph and run all the different ammo I have in .50 AE. So far, I have collected up at least a dozen factory loadings and types to try for it, so it will take a bit more time. That will be the most fun yet.
If anyone wants part numbers or more specific information about the ammo fired, just let me know.
